Loan Repayment Programs

Primary care health professionals who are providing full-time clinical services in a public or non-profit facility located in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area are also eligible for state loan repayment programs. Ohio residents should contact Geri Rousculp from the Ohio Department of Health’s Primary Care/Rural Health Program at 614.644.8508 or BCHS@odh.ohio.gov. We also excluded the National Health Service Corp program.

The National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program (NHSC LRP) offers primary care medical, dental and mental and behavioral health providers the opportunity to have their student loans repaid, while earning a competitive salary, in exchange for providing health care in urban, rural or frontier communities with limited access to care. Visit NHSC.hrsa.gov and click on “loan repayment” for more information or to apply.

The NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program, formerly the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program, helps alleviate the shortage of nurses across the country. It offers loan repayment assistance to registered nurses and advanced practice nurses, such as nurse practitioners, working at Critical Shortage Facilities and nurse faculty employed at accredited schools of nursing. Program participants receive up to 60 percent of their qualifying student loans in exchange for a two-year service commitment—and an additional 25 percent of their original loan balance for an optional third year. See hrsa.gov/loanscholarships/repayment/nursing/factsheet.pdf to learn more.
