MSN Majors

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing gives you a choice of different MSN majors, plus specialties. If you are working as a nurse, the School of Nursing offers courses in nontraditional formats, including intensive and online courses.

All nurse practitioner students must choose a primary specialty from one of the six major population areas: family, adult-gerontology, neonatalology, pediatrics, women’s health and psychiatric mental health. Students then can complete the curricular plan with the additional specialty course for their area of interest, such as flight nursing or palliative care.

Post-master's certificates can be provided for all programs and are crafted according to individual needs and background education.

Majors

Palliative Care specialty can be added to any MSN major.

Flight Nursing specialty can be added to Acute Care majors.

More Information

Most MSN students must take at least 10 core courses in:

  • Professional Development
  • Scientific Inquiry
  • Nursing Practice (for nurse practitioner majors)

Although the MSN program itself requires a minimum of 36 credit hours to graduate, the majors require an average of 40 credit hours, usually completed between 18 and 24 months. The nurse anesthesia program requires 30 months of study.

You'll also need at least 500 clinical hours for most MSN majors; the anesthesia and midwifery programs require more. The specialties also add clinical hours to the programs. If you have any questions, our admissions advisors are available to help you understand the options within your areas of interest.
